A new mural in Los Angeles’ Koreatown is helping bring a piece of the neighborhood’s cultural history back into the public eye. Korean American artist Dave Young Kim has completed his first mural in Koreatown, creating a colorful tribute to Korean traditions and the community that shaped his childhood.

Located at the Korean Resource Center, the mural features traditional Korean drummers performing pungmulnori, a folk tradition that combines music, dance and acrobatics. Sweeping ribbons of color, blooming plum blossoms and subtle images of traditional Korean architecture add depth to the large-scale artwork.
For Kim, the project is deeply personal. Growing up in Koreatown, he remembers seeing murals depicting Korean dancers, drummers and historical figures throughout the neighborhood. Many of those works have since disappeared, and Kim says the public art that once reflected Korean culture has become far less common.
The mural was developed with help from the Koreatown Storytelling Program, which connects young people with older residents through oral history interviews. Stories collected from elders helped influence the artwork, including the depiction of traditional architecture as a symbol of home.
The project also highlights a broader concern about Koreatown's changing identity. While Korean-owned businesses and Korean-language signs remain a major part of the neighborhood, longtime residents and artists say there are fewer public displays celebrating Korean culture than in previous decades.
Kim hopes the mural can help change that. Rather than simply recreate the past, his work brings together multiple generations, with an older immigrant drummer leading younger performers who represent the continuation of Korean traditions today.
As Koreatown continues to evolve, the mural serves as both a celebration of its history and a reminder of the importance of preserving cultural identity in public spaces. For residents and future generations, it offers a colorful piece of Korean heritage that can be experienced every day on the streets of the neighborhood.
